In less than sixteen months from today, the clock would be winding down fast on the Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration. As the people of Akwa Ibom State prepare for the election of the next governor who, from May 29, 2023, will steer the ship of the state renowned for its immense contributions to Nigeria’s resources and pride via oil and gas, and the spectacular achievement in sports, arts, culture, academics, and business, it looks good about the election that the PDP’s Hon. Idorenyin James Umo, a former member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, from Ibiono Ibom local government area will carry the day.

Honourable Idorenyin Umo’s extensive track record as a businessman and grassroots politician guarantees the people of Akwa Ibom State a great future. Why? Umo is the very definition of the ICT and business success story, and he is more exposed internationally in ICT. His company, IBBIL Computers Limited, an internationally recognized ICT organization, has impacted positively on the lives of a large number of Nigerians through computer training programmes for varied clientele including students of various school levels, adults of various occupations and backgrounds, and a number of government/private agencies and parastatals for more than 20 years.

As a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of State Assembly who represented Ibiono Ibom State Constituency between 1999 and 2003, Hon. Umo gave a good account of himself in office. While he served as Deputy Majority Leader and chairman of several House Committees, he initiated many programmes and attracted projects including renovation of schools, hospitals, electrification and water projects that positively impacted on the lives of the people. Not only that, the period of his stay in office got many constituents to gain permanent employment with the government, while indigent students enjoyed enormous scholarship too.

The Man, Idorenyin James Umo, was never found wanting in the line of duty as a lawmaker. Through his diligence during oversight functions, he brought the attention of government to some abandoned and corked oil wells in the state, a situation which had made life unbearable for those living in the affected communities at the time. As one of the vocal voices in the Second Assembly, Hon. Umo also waded into what was perceived as abuse and marginalization of Akwa Ibom indigenes working in ExxonMobil in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The outcome of that effort was the immediate promotion of some indigenous workers to senior managerial positions. That singular effort saw the elevation of an Akwa Ibom son to the enviable position of Vice Chairman of the corporation, the man who continued work diligently and retired honorably. No doubt, Hon. Umo will not only bring his wealth of experience to the office of governor when elected, he will also show that in the Hilton Mansion, he will be getting things done when the time surely comes.

The pace at which society is able to make meaningful progress is critically dependent on the quality and commitment of its leadership. As a homegrown politician and widely traveled entrepreneur, Hon. Idorenyin Umo says his focus will be to replicate the development strategies of Dubai, China, and Singapore as well as the security and agricultural might of Israel, among others, in Akwa Ibom State when he resumes as governor.
